These rugs are made in Kashmir, and help support a cottage industry that employs elderly men, mostly during the long tedious winter months.  The traditional patterns used for this type of flooring are the historical Mughal and Persian inspired ones.  Interestingly, the rugs are not woven, but are embroidered using a curved hook.  In this way the embroidery can follow the design providing a textural interest to the execution.  This particular technique inspired a series of rugs based on cell formations that I had found in the cross-sections of plant stems and roots. The embroidery is carried out in long lines which can follow the curves of the pattern, providing fluidity in the final piece which marries technique and pattern perfectly. All patterns can be custom sized, and colored.  We can also make custom patterns.
