A GARDEN IN THE DUNES

AMAGANSETT, NEW YORK

The entrance of this garden is nestled in the dunes, the main idea was to preserve the informal feeling of a boardwalk set over sand. A mixture of native and non-native plants create a narrative of passage between the pool, yoga studios, and pergolas. The garden is designed to require minimal upkeep and provide winter interest. A massing of plants reinforce two axes that provide the ‘backbone’ of the garden. The pool is hidden from the house with a mass of plants that provide all seasonal interest. Tonal palettes of pinks and whites give way to darker reds and golds in the fall. Lime green and blue provide a restful pattern for quiet recreation. A mixture of native and non-native host plants attract local insects and wildlife in all seasons. The spent seed heads of Veronicastrum and Astilbe are designed to provide continual seasonal interest.
